So close, yet so far away....
By megmul
I received my +one yesterday, and it is fantastic in so many ways, but there are a couple of things that may be deal-breakers. I haven't decided yet whether I'm keeping it.
I searched high and low for an inline double jogging stroller. I really, really did not want a bulky side-by-side, but I definitely wanted a jogger for two kids. My daughter and I have put hundreds of miles on our single jogger and I want to keep it up once our next child is born. I was so excited when I finally found the +one. I was very hesitant to buy a such an expensive stroller sight-unseen, but the free return shipping sealed the deal.
My daughter is 3 years old and my son won't be born until June, so I can't review the 2 kid functionality yet. My 3 year old is 40 inches tall and weighs 33 pounds. I am a 5'10" tall woman, planning to use this stroller for running on paved surfaces.
The good:
Very maneuverable; handles like a single.
Very light weight, considering how big it is
Awesome sun shade
Lots of storage
Great adjustability in the handle bar (I'm tall; this matters)
The infant cocoon seems well-made and comfortable
The bad:
The seats are both very small and shallow. I thought this would be uncomfortable, but my daughter said it was fine even after an hour-long run. Still, I'm afraid that she is going to out grow it.
Very limited leg room in the back seat. My 3 year old will never fit back there.
The footrest for the front seat is not adjustable, and it's extremely short. There is no comfortable position for my 3 year old to put her legs. Not having that adjustability on such an expensive stroller is really unacceptable to me. If we end up keeping it, I'm going to have to rig up some kind of alternate footrest for her.
The deal-breaker: The front wheel cannot be locked into a stationary position. They say it can be, but in the locked position, it still rotates through about 10-15 degrees. I called Mountain Buggy to ask how to adjust this, and you can't. That's just the way it is. This is not acceptable for jogging. I have to constantly make adjustments as I'm running and it's really annoying. I can't decide if this is something I'll get used to over time, or if this is a total deal-breaker. My single jogger has a totally fixed wheel and I'm just not used to making the adjustments. I was all over the sidewalk with this thing and it was distracting and annoying. My daughter kept asking me why I'm such a crazy driver.
If the front wheel were totally lockable, and the footrest was adjustable, I'd give this thing 5 stars. No stroller is totally perfect, but those are two issues I just can't overlook.
I realize that this stroller is technically not advertised as a jogger, so maybe I am expecting too much. But with a suspension and a lockable front wheel, I think it's natural to assume that this could be used for jogging.
UPDATE: I decided to keep the stroller, since I eventually got used to the not-quite-locking front wheel. My baby is now 7 weeks old and I've been using the stroller in 2 kid mode for several weeks. I like the stroller overall, but there are a few annoyances that have popped up that I think should have been addressed on such an expensive stroller:
1. The sunshade that I had originally raved about isn't so great in infant mode. It does not quite cover the entire bassinet portion. There is a 2-inch gap at the back of the sunshade, so depending on the time of day, my baby's face can be in direct sunlight. I solved this problem the same way I solve sunshade problems on other strollers: I used binder clips to attach a receiving blanket to the sunshade and close the gap. It works, but I'm annoyed that I have to deal with this in a $600 stroller.
2. The cocoon has several issues. The first is that it is totally flat; very few babies enjoy laying totally flat. I put a rolled-up towel under one end, but it would be nice if this were actually adjustable. The cocoon is very soft and dark and deep, which is great for keeping a baby warm and cozy and away from the elements while napping. My baby will nap in this stroller for hours. However, the fact that it's so deep means that there is very little airflow, which is not good for the summer. He is a sweaty mess by the time I take him out. I have installed a battery powered fan that helps some, but I wish part of the cocoon was breathable mesh to allow some natural airflow.
3. The front footrest again.....it is just terrible. I think I am going to take an angle grinder to it and cut off the useless, too short, non-adjustable part that sticks out and weld something on lower down, in a more appropriate location. This is one thing that just bugs my daughter and I every time we use the stroller.

Mountain Buggy +ONE vs Phil and Teds Sport (oldish model)
By I. Gonzalez
Ok, so le me start by saying that as a mother of three boys, I've been able to try my good share of strollers (PegPerego, Combi, Joovy, Bugaboo, Micralite, etc.), but I'm only going to write about the Phil and Teds Sport and my spanking new and awesome Mountain Buggy +One. I would definitely put both strollers in the same category as far as being rugged and serving the same purpose (eg being able to convert from a single to a double, inline style). I bought my PT back in 2009 (November to be exact) when expecting another baby and that same stroller has been used and a little bit abused on a daily basis by two very active boys. HOWEVER, I do not think that I got my money's worth: it only lasted all of 2010 and six months of this current 2011. IMO, not enough when you are talking about a supposedly RUGGED stroller that costs over $500. What happened to it? Well, the materials used by PT are cheap, granted, they DO look good! The sun canopy is a joke, the storage is NON-existent when you have a second child sitting inside of it (duh!), the foam handlebar rips as soon as you start using it (careful as you may be), and the tires are TERRIBLE! Just like about EVERYONE who owns a PT, our inner tubes bursted and that was that. Replacements are SOOOO expensive, that by ordering them you are half way there to getting a new stroller!
So, all in all, I did like my PT while it lasted.... it didn't pass the test of time or use, and it looks like a 5-6 yr old stroller (was NEVER used for jogging/running). It looks good, but it does tip when a child jumps in the back seat and there's no child in front. Yeah, I know that it's the law of physics, but it is almost impossible to keep a 2 yr. from doing that!
Moving on... Mountain Buggy +One!!!~ What a good looking stroller this is! It took my hubby and I all of five minutes to put it together and voila! Steers with a finger PLUS it looks and feels EXPENSIVE. Materials used are soooo much nicer (although both companies are owned by PT now), and we love the idea of being able to have both kids higher up, able to look forward and not facing the back of a seat. Now that we are having another baby, we LOVE the bassinet that is INCLUDED. The canopy is HUGE and the storage basket is always usable, as the second child does not interfere much (if at all) with it. Love that the handle is made of strong rubber and not foam and the tires seem much more durable so far. Oh, it also includes a water bottle holder.... PT includes none! And the child seats much more upright in the MB, which I like!
So, the stroller is slightly bulkier, but something's gotta give! You get a MUCH MUCH better stroller for the value and it turns even more heads that the PT! When I'm out and about with my new MB, I feel like I'm driving a STRONG, RUGGED stroller... and not my flimsy, Made-in-China-like PT! :) Mind you, I think both are made in China! ha
Well, I hope this helps with your decision-making! Feel free to ask any questions and enjoy the tedious and time-consumming experience of stroller-shopping! I know I spend HOURS doing so... but I secretly enjoy it!
Good luck!!!

a versatile, well-made stroller
By shan1212
I'm giving this stroller 5 stars because it's excellent for my needs, but I'll discuss scenarios in which it might not work for you too. I am expecting my second child in 5 weeks, so I wanted something that would accommodate both of my children. My older child is currently 2 years and 3 months and weighs 32 pounds.
I live in the city and walk for most trips out of the house during the week. Therefore, I was not concerned with finding a stroller that would fit easily in my car. I can't really speak to its compactness or ease of lifting. Like another reviewer, I have gotten a Joovy Ultralight Caboose for my small hatchback car. But my BOB sport utility fit in my cargo space with the wheels off, so I imagine this will too.
Previously I had a BOB Sport Utility for running and a Mutsy 4Rider Light for everyday use. Faced with the prospect of having a giant double BOB *and* a double walking stroller, I decided to research options and found the Plus One. Here's why I'm psyched about it:
*I can lock the front wheel and jog with it (on narrow city sidewalks where a double BOB wouldn't fit!)
*The baby can lie flat in the back seat
*Both seats have a seat capacity of 44 pounds (higher than the Phil and Teds) so I don't have to worry about outgrowing it for a while
*In singles mode it's really no bigger than our single BOB, but with better storage, a more comfortable seat, and room to stuff jackets in the back where the second seat goes
*It comes with the cocoon and the second seat
*Despite the unusual configuration, the second seat really is roomy. My two year old loved sitting back there when we tried this out in the store and could hardly be convinced to try out the front seat. The foot pouch that you unzip really does give the back child enough room. We have diaper bag clips on the handle bar, so any loss of storage space is no big deal.
*HUGE sun shade
Here are the possible cons:
*A few years from now when my older child is in school, I may still want to run with my younger child. Your standard single BOB or Mountain Buggy jogger takes a child up to 70 or 80 pounds, but I can't find any information that it's OK to have a single, heavier child in the Plus One while in singles mode. If the 44 pound weight limit applies, there might be a time when I want a more rugged jogger. This is built on the Urban Jungle frame which goes up to 70 pounds, though, so I'm hopeful it would still work.
*In doubles mode, neither seat can recline, so when the baby outgrows the cocoon, there might be an awkward period where you need to prop up with blankets or something. You can also get the freerider board for your older child and recline the younger child in singles mode.
*A three wheel inline stroller is a little tippier than a four wheel like my Mutsy, so it doesn't handle going up curbs as well. I've learned that I need to suspend the front wheel in the air until the back wheels have made it to the curb, then lift. If you lift the back wheels too soon, there's not enough stability for the front wheel. I think locking the wheel would help but I haven't tried it yet.
*The foot rest is not adjustable. Our two year old has to bend her legs to get her feet on it. A 3 or 4 year old might have to dangle the legs to the side or really bend their legs to sit comfortably.
I love the handlebar (much better than the foam of my BOB), the rear suspension, and the versatility. I love that I have saved space and money by combining my stroller needs into this one, compact, rugged stroller. It's not perfect in all regards, but I'm really happy with all the options I have. I like that when I only have one child with me, I'm not pushing around a half-empty, super wide stroller.
